Consumerism and Community
While I am not a big fan of consumerism (i do love my toys and gadgets, yes) I must admit I do see a great bit of community at the mall. Whether it be the mother and daughter (both dressed in same fashion mind you) with their full matching shopping bags, or the father/son coming out of the sporting goods store, community is there. Also the family together getting ice cream or funnel cake. I remember those outings as a kid. for me as a kid it seemed to be more going to the Sears outlet store in downtown Santa Ana or when we were lucky, we got to go out to breakfast with the other families after church. Occasionally, we would figure it out as we were on the freeway that we were going to Knotts or Disneyland. (the parents would have extra clothes in the trunk and we would change in the parking lot, but that way they could surprise us. My parents ruled…still do! Those were the highlights I remembered.
Back to the consumerism community rant, while I hate blatant consumerism and what it seems to teach, guess if I need to pull something good out of it, then the sense of community it portrays would be it. The only real reason I see it is because my job puts me in the middle of it. Otherwise I do not end up at malls very often.
What is your opinion of it?
Also..here are the TRON tattoos!
