Are kids that bored nowadays?
[rant]
Maybe it is just me being old, but really, are kids that bored nowadays? There are kids (13-16 tops)hanging out at the mall everyday. The same kids. And they will do laps and hang out in front of the store, come in and check their myspace (hence the nickname “myspace kids”) do another lap, check their myspace, etc…
Thay are done up in the latest psuedo-emo/goth/metrosexual attire, including straightened hair and makeup, all day…for the mall for gods sake. I am no stranger to crimped hair and makeup, so don’t get on them for that, but it wasn’t every day by noon at the mall. So I was on my break and stopped to use the restroom, and when I was done at the urinal I turned to go wash my hands and there is one of them with the flat iron in front of the mirror straightening his hair.I giggled to myself and started to wash my hands when I notice a couple more hanging out on and under the changing table. Then I realize 2 of them are girls. It creeped me out as they are underaged and potentially could be serious trouble for and adult male if they unknowingly exposed themselves and the girls said something. I told them they couldn’t be in there and that it could be serious trouble if things got misconstrued. I mean seriously, are you that fucking bored that you have to watch your friend straighten his hair at the mall on a Tuesday afternoon? They begged me not to tell on them, but the only thing I said is that they should leave. I then told my manager and she agreed that I should inform mall security, which I did. Something about the whole experience there weirded me out. When I was that age, we might go to the mall once a week, not every day. We would even ride the bikes from Irvine to South Coast Plaza…then once actually through South Coast Plaza. =-D We would go different places to cause trouble, or just hang in the park drinking Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill or Mickey’s Big Mouth and smoking cigarettes while playing games in the park or listening to music. I do understand being a bored teenager in Irvine, having been one 20 years ago, but it seemed like we were more productive with our boredom. That and I started working when I was 15 1/2. [/rant]
On a bonus note though, I found $10 as I was getting into my car after work. Yay!
Another Bonus: I was asked to help with a geek database program/solution. I love things like this.Figuring what needs to be done and creating it. I am pretty sure it is well within the scope of what I can do, and am researching the options. A great thing is I can be honest and if it turns out to be out of my league, I know others that I can hand it off to. The database isn’t that big of a deal, I just want to make sure I can program the interface correctly to have the input/output that is requested. I love having challenges. That and there is another programming solution at work we are developing. It is almost time to put the concept into practical usage. I hope it works as we are planning.

Kids these days…
On some level it’s the same as when we were their age, and on some level it’s a whole new ball game. I’m sure we were a new ball game for people our age back then too.
I think it’s harder these days for the 13-15 set. Too old/*cool* for day-camp, too young to work. Summer jobs go to the 16 year olds instead of the 15.5 year olds and people are less inclined to hire teens to babysit and do yard work.
We used to go to the mall every day for weeks on end during the summer. I have clear memories of doing laps, standing infront of stores and doing make-up in the bathrooms. But we also spent days on end down on Main Street, doing laps up and down Main Street, in the water, eating at Wimpys, buying Jolt and smokes from the liquor store next door and on the beach. (small memory explosion there.)
In 10-20 years those teens will probably be having this conversation with their friends.
Those girls in the mens room? Very odd.
