Pencil Fights
Do you remember pencil fights? I just had a flashback about them. First, a little background on what brought this about.
I woke up a little earlier than planned this morning, but wasn’t ready to get out of bed. In the twilight sleep before I had to get up I had a dream about making pencils. Not regular pencils, but something that I would add ingredients to a small beaker and then it would cure into a pencil. Weird, I know. May have had something to do with watching the Science channel last night.
The mad scientist pencil of my dreams reminded me of what I believe were called “Choice” but I could be wrong. It wasn’t true wood. It seemed like it was rubber and wood compressed. They had a lot of bend and seemed good on the defense because they would give. But they also had a weak spot that when they broke, they broke clean. Not like a regular pencil that might splinter a little.
The Dixon Ticonderogawas always a good choice with it’s long metal eraser casing. There were so many types out there and everyone seemed to have a preference.
Depending on the “Rules” you could take the eraser out, bite the metal to make an “axe” out of the crimp, and hack away.
Another way around was the “no rules” game where I remember having a giant Magic Mountain pencil that was about a half inch diameter. It was great. I think it finally lost to multiple “axe” attacks.
Someone (may have been me, or I acquired it somehow) made a fake pencil out of a dowel and just inserted a little lead into end and put an eraser on the other end. It was mainly as an equalizer when everyone knew what was going on. It would be fun to just destroy pencils that were getting ready to go.
There was also a technique on the hit. you had to hook the top of the pencil with your thumb, and torque the resistance with the other hand, then let it fly. If you had an “axe” you had the potential to poke your own finger. You also had to be careful if your pencil had a lot of damage. If you pulled back too much then you could break your own pencil.
The teachers didn’t like it that much, and would usually come break them up, but that was half the fun.
Fun is in the simple things…
Oh yeah, I just found out that Rock Band is available for the PS2. How stoked am I?
